What are YOUR Yosemite memories?
Did you skip stones or float on linked inner tubes down the Merced River? Have you hiked the difficult Mist Trail to Vernal Falls or the steep switchbacks to the top of Yosemite Falls? Are you lucky enough to remember the famous Fire Fall and when Mirror Meadow was actually a lake? Does your spirit soar at higher elevation and compel you to summit a peak or strap on a pack and hike to a favorite campsite or High Sierra Camp? Whether you relax in the comfort of clean linens and fine dining or pitch a tent among the trees and feast on freeze-dried food, you are drawn to Yosemite’s captivating beauty to unwind and nourish your soul. Whatever your recollections, Yosemite is truly a magical place. As Hawaiian Shirts capture an island’s "Aloha Spirit”, the colors and landmarks of this "Yosemite Hawaiian™" design rekindle warm feelings of past adventures in the Sierra "Island Paradise", and inspire dreams of those to come.
About the Designer:
Yosemite is my favorite place on earth. When I was nine, my father introduced our family to the Park’s High Sierra Camps. We continued backpacking in Yosemite for our summer vacations until my college years when I was fortunate to be able to work at Merced Lake and Sunrise High Sierra Camps. In the fall of 1993 my secret lifelong dream to be married in the Yosemite Chapel and celebrate at the Ahwahnee Hotel came true with Paul. Creating this artwork was especially challenging due to my desire to make this artwork “perfect”. Anything less would not be worthy of Yosemite.
In 2012, My father, Kendall and I hiked to Vogelsang HSC to celebrate his 80th Birthday. We had a fabulous time, even meeting guests with connections to people he knew in the education department.
5 days after we returned from Yosemite, Kendall ran a race in San Diego that he entered annually. He was excited to be at the top of his age category that year. Sadly, after crossing the finish line of the duathlon, he collapsed and passed away. He did achieve first place. It was a devastating loss. He seemed so healthy and vibrant and on our hike we talked about ideas for his 90th and 100th Yosemite birthdays!
Yosemite Hawaiian™ is dedicated to my father, Kendall Webb, who inspired my love for nature and backpacking and to my husband, Paul, who pushed me to finally create this design, and to the memory of my mother, Lynette, whose spirit is also alive in Yosemite.
About the Design:
Situated on a background of the omnipresent Sierra granite are the magnificent Yosemite, Nevada, Vernal and Bridalveil Falls, the massive El Capitan, Half Dome and Lembert Dome, and the lofty Cathedral and Vogelsang Peaks. Man-made structures include the elegant Ahwahnee and Wawona Hotels, the Yosemite Chapel and the tent cabins of the High Sierra Camps and Camp Curry. Activities depicted are river rafting, mountain climbing, mountain biking, backpacking and camping. Featured flora and fauna include various Sierra wildflowers, trees such as the Hemlock, Giant Sequoia, Redwood and Lodgepole Pine, the marmot, Belding ground squirrel, Yosemite toad, Bighorn sheep, Peregrine falcon, Stellar's Jay, Black bear and deer. A Miwok Village scene represents the valley's first inhabitants, and a National Park Ranger on horseback honors the dedicated men and women who manage the parks, its inhabitants and visitors. And of course John Muir completes the design as he oversees all from his granite perch.
