Third Marine Air Wing Tribute — 50th Anniversary of the Blue Angels — An F4U Corsair and an F/-18 Hornet appear over an Orange County sunrise/sunset landscape in this Paul Gavin 1996 MCAS El Toro Air Show painting representing the U.S. Marines' residence at MCAS El Toro. The Third Marine Air Wing logo (3D MAW), the El Toro Bull logo, the flags, and the "Hail and Farewell" stand in tribute to El Toro's place as the West Coast Marine Air Wing's home for the last 40 years. This image also celebrates the 1996 50th Anniversary of the Blue Angels. The Navy precision flying Squadron, who took their name from a famous New York nightclub, began when three Grumman F6F Hellcats took to the sky at a Jacksonville, Florida Air Show in June, 1946. They continue to introduce and represent the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation around the world.
